"Warriors of Wrestling" Week 9
The now-familiar music plays and the Sarge welcomes us in his traditional manner. The show opens with Ken Resnick and Missy Hyatt doing a recap of the Santana/Orton title match from 2 weeks ago. Missy contends, "Cowboy Bob Orton had to have been the shortest reigning champion in the history of wrestling. What was it...12...15 seconds?" This week we're going to be treated to the ring stylings of Steve Doll, the Blacktop Bully, Sargent Slaughter, and a six-man tag main event with Chief Charlie Norris, Billy 2 Eagles, and Konnan 2000 facing the Texas Hangmen and the Super Destroyer. We are now sent down to ringside with Mick Karch and Lord Alfred Hayes.
Mick Karch opens with, "Well, thanks a lot. There's a true "Beauty and the Beast", Missy Hyatt and Ken Resnick." "Hey, don't call Missy Hyatt a beast again!", demands an irate Lord Alfred. They discuss the fine journalistic talents of Missy as the ring announcer introduces the first match.
1st Match - Steve Doll vs Bob Bradley
"What a future is going to unfold for him," Alfred comments about Doll as he comes to the ring. Mick Karch comments excessively about Steve Doll's presumed youth and what a great match we are about to see with Bob Bradley. Doll and Bradley tie up and Bob is driven into the corner. "We're not an infomercial for a PPV, this is wrestling the way it should be," contends Mick Karch, despite the announced intention of a '97 PPV for the AWF. The wrestlers stall in the ring while Karch tells us how under-rated Bob Bradley is. Doll wins a "test of strength", goes down to Bradley's "leg trip", but recovers to throw Bradley into the corner once again. A "head scissors" from the corner takes Bradley to the mat and Doll follows with a "drop kick" that causes Bradley to leave the ring for a breather. Doll attempts the "head scissors" again but, having been to the well too many times, gets dropped on his head. His following "drop kick" scores and Bradley exits the ring once again. "I have to hand it to Steve Doll. for a man who has only been in the profession a couple of years, he is ring-wise. He knows where he is at all times," says a confused Mick Karch, seemingly unaware that Doll made his ring debut in 1984, a year prior to Wrestlemania. Bradley re-enters the ring and takes over with an "eye gouge" and a drag across the top rope. A series of lefts and rights by Bradley set up a "bulldog" and a near pin. The round ends with Steve Doll in a "sleeper hold."
Insert - The Rat Pack - Adnon rants in some weird dialect while Mr. Hughes and Manny Fernandez gesture maniacally into the camera. "Manny Fernandez is a very dangerous character, indeed," chimes in Alfred as Fernandez gnaws on Adnon's robes.
Round 2
Bradley starts out strong with a series of punches and kicks. He gets Doll in a "reverse chinlock" down on the mat and keeps him there. Eventually Doll breaks the hold with a series of "elbows to the midsection", but is hurled into the corner. He charges out of the corner with a "clothesline" followed by a "snap suplex". Doll does a big "clothesline off the top ropes", but Bradley counters with a "flying head scissors". A "flying cross body block" delivered from a wobbly stance atop the corner turnbuckle finishes off Bradley for the pin and a second round victory for Steve Doll.
Match 2 - The Storm Trooper vs the Blacktop Bully w/ Big Mama
The Storm Trooper appears wearing a black leather vest that gives no indication of where and how he aquired his name. He doesn't look up to the task at hand. The Bully charges into the ring and immediately tackles the Storm Trooper. The ST is, "getting stormed on," according to Mick Karch, meaning he's taking a pummeling in the ring. The Bully wraps the Trooper's arm around the rope and beats him with his fists. Big Mama points to the ring as the Buly stomps the Storm Trooper. He applies the "Breaker 1-9er" and gets a quick submission. "The Blacktop Bully doesn't hear officials, he doesn't hear the bell, he only hears the snapping of bones," says the ever-informative Mick Karch as the Bully and Big Mama, his middle-aged companion pose in the ring.
Insert - Koko B. Ware appears with Frankie to teach us how to do "The Bird". Frankie appears unimpressed.
Interview - Missy Hyatt in the executive offices of the AWF with a potential scoop that a superstar is being signed by AWF President Paul Alperstein even as she is speaking. Boogaloo Brown appears, but refuses to comment. Hopefully, Missy will have information by the end of the hour.
Interview - Ken Resnick and AWF Commissioner Jim Bruzell. Brunzell confirms that he and Paul Alperstein are in negotiation with a "big superstar", and wonders where Missy Hyatt gets her information. Resnick congratulates him on enforcing the rules during the Santana/Orton match and then asks about Nailz. Brunzell announces that Nailz has been fined and that a match with Tony Atlas has been set up for him next week to "settle the score." The Blacktop Bully interrupts to announce that his purpose in the AWF is to use the "Breaker 1-9" to break arms. He complains about the fans looking at his "honey", Big Mama and warns Ken Resnick not to look at her. I decided that for myself weeks ago.
Match 3 - Nasty Ned vs Sgt. Slaughter
In reference to the "scoop" by Missy, Alfred claims, "I know who it is and he's a big, big star!" Nasty Ned looks like a member of Ernest T. Bass' family from an old episode of Andy Griffith. Slaughter makes his way to the ring accompanied by his flag bearer, "high-fiving" the fans and kissing babies all the way. Karch credits the Sarge for keeping Adnon out of the Orton'Santana match and Lord Alfred replies, "Believe me, Tito Santana would not be the champion that he is today without Sargent Slaughter," who he goes on to classify as a "meddler." Slaughter salutes the camera and removes his drill hat to wrestle. The "USA" chant goes up and makes us question the nationality of Nasty Ned. Slaughter throws Ned to the mat and does an uncharacteristic dance for the fans. Shawn Michaels needn't worry about the Sarge's dancing talents.
Insert - Nailz announces, "I paid my stupid fine once again to the authorities. Jim Brunzell, I hope you got a little extra spending money. Tony Atlas, I'm looking for you! Come to the ring next week and I'll break you in half."
As Nailz is talking, Ned rakes the eyes and bites Slaughter on the nose. He chops the big former GI, throws him into the corner and "splashes" him. Ned unloads with lefts and rights until he gets the Sarge's attention. Slaughter turns him around, hurls him across the ring, and hits him with the "Slaughter Cannon" from the second rope. He cinches in the "Cobra Clutch" in the center of the ring for a first round submission. "Well I'll tell 'ya, when Nasty Ned started to break the rules, throw the rulebook out the window, it was just a matter of time. He raised the ire of the Sarge, " summed up Mick Karch.
Match 4 - The Main Event
The Texas Hangmen and Super Destroyer vs Chief Charlie Norris, Billy 2 Eagles, and Konnan 2000
Karch advises us, "It's been a long while since we've seen a six-man tag and this is a good one." Charlie Norris and one of the Hangmen start out. The announcing team can't decide which Hangman it is. Norris opens with a shoulder tackle and a chop, then chops the second Hangman who has run into the ring to assist his partner. Super Destroyer comes in to get a chop, also. Norris tags in 2 Eagles who "double clotheslines" both Hangmen and Konnan 2000 jumps in to get some shots in, too. The three drive their opponents out of the ring as the ref struggles to restore order. Karch voices the opinion that six-man matches should have two referees. Konnan 2000 scores a near-pin, then tags in 2 Eagles, who continues the assault with a "monkey flip" from the corner. The Hangman charges 2 Eagles, who ducks and the Hangman flies over the top rope onto the floor while Billy 2 Eagles dances in the ring. Norris tags in, then Konnan, in a concerted effort to destroy the injured Hangman. Super Destroyer catches Konnan's leg from outside the ring, to gain the upper hand for his team. As the round comes to a close, Konnan 2000 is being "triple teamed" in the Hangmen's corner. After the round ends, SD stands on Konnan's throat while the Hangmen stomp him mercilessly.
Insert - Honky Tonk Man and Angel Baby
"Thousands of cards and letters are pouring in for the Honky Tonk Man and they're wantin' to know if Angel Baby and the Honky Tonk Man are on such a roll that we can't be stopped. All I can say is, 'Yes, we are.' If the AWF and everybody else will just start lining 'em up, the Honky Tonk Man is gonna knock 'em down." More to the point, he wants a match with Tito Santana.
Round 2
Super Destroyer and Konnan 2000 trade moves until Konnan scores a "big drop kick" and a "piledriver" to get a near-pin, but the Hangmen break it up. 2 Eagles tags in to work on SD. Norris takes over, and then Konnan again, as the faces take turns dominating the Super Destroyer. Billy 2 Eagles comes in with a "drop kick" from the top turnbuckle. Killer tags in and "powerbombs" 2 Eagles to set up a "body drop" off the turnbuckle. A distracted ref isn't there to count so 2 Eagles escapes, but not far, as he is given a "side suplex" into a cover that Konnan 2000 runs in to break up. Super Destroyer tags in and scores a 2 count on 2 Eagles as Round 2 ends.
Insert - Ricco Suave and the Family with their backs to the camera because we, "don't deserve to look at their beautiful faces." The Road Warriors won't get to see the faces of Rich and Valentine in the ring until they,"win some matches."
Round 3
SD and 2 Eagles trade blows until SD gets the upper hand and slaps on a "Boston crab". Konnan breaks the hold with a "big boot." One of the Hangmen tags in and beats on Billy - gets a 2 count. Mick Karch notes that the Hangmen seem to suffer from a lack of guidence since Bogaloo Brown is meeting with Paul Alperstein instead of being at ringside. Billy 2 Eagles is "triple-teamed" in the hangmen's corner as the ref is, once again, distracted. One of the Hangmen climbs the corner for a "clothesline" off the top, but 2 Eagles ducks and Killer nails Psycho (or vice versa). SD is tagged in but is not successful at keeping 2 Eagles from tagging Chief Charlie Norris, who takes over with chops and kicks. Norris blocks his head from impacting the turnbuckle and climbs the corner to hit SD with a "big chop". Everybody gets into the ring and pandemonium breaks loose as Norris scores a "Chipawah Chop" off the top and rolls up Super Destroyer for the pin. The winning team celebrates and leaves the ring where the Hangmen beat up Super Destroyer, their former partner.
Interview - Ken Resnick announces that a number of big superstars will be coming to the AWF and then introduces Hawk and Animal, who join him in the ring. "They are magnificent, " crows Lord Alfred Hayes. Hawk starts the interview, "Setbacks, in life we've had few, in the ring we've had few. About the only slight one I can remember is I was abducted by aliens in '82, but we won't get into that now. That set me back a little while." He continues, "Ricco Suave, there's a rumor going around that you sat on a quarter and a booger popped out of George Washington's nose. Why don't you get that team of yours in the ring with us?" Animal talks about the top talent in the AWF and the quality of the ring girls, but can't understand why they have to beat somebody to get a title shot since, "We've won more tag titles than any team in the history of wrestling." Hawk, "When we get through with the Hammer and Luscious Rich, they're going to look like skin on a hanger." Sounds like Hawk's been eating from the magic mushroom patch again! Ken Resnick sums it up with, "Nothing more need be said."
At this point, the show is running long and my local station jumps into a WB promotion. We never find out if Missy cracked her big story, what next weeks lineup is, or whether the Sarge feels we have or haven't made the right choice. We'll find out next week, no doubt.
